How the Mitti De Baway Cast Characters Are Connected

With more than 30 named characters across three timelines, it helps to see the Mitti De Baway cast as four groups. Almost every conflict in the drama comes from these groups crossing each other.

  • The Channan family (Baala’s side): Iqbal Channan (Wahaj Ali), his wife Zareena (Amar Khan), their son Ibrahim, and his brothers Aslam “Achi” (Ahmed Randhawa) and Ejaz “Joji” (Mubashir Mehmood). His parents, played by Sahiba Afzal and Afzal Khan, are folk performers, and that background is the “shame” Billo uses against him.
  • The Shah family (Billo’s in-laws): Nazeer Shah (Junaid Khan), his father Shahji (Shahnawaz Zaidi) and his sister Nousheen (Anika Zulfikar). Their pride over caste and status sets off the bloodshed.
  • Phajja’s gang: Phajja (Sohail Ahmed) hides Baala after the killings and then uses him for armed robberies. This is where Baala’s slide into crime begins.
  • The Peer’s household: The Peer (Javed Rizvi) gives Billo shelter after she is thrown out, and she later marries him. This gives her the power and protection she uses in her revenge on Baala.

Two outsiders tie the groups together. Mai Pathan (Samiya Mumtaz), once a servant in Billo’s family, knows the secrets of Billo’s past. Ghulam Rasool (Rasheed Khan) takes the blame for Baala’s killings and dies in prison, which brings his widow Qamar-un-Nisa (Hina Afridi) into Baala’s life.

Billo vs Baala: Who Is the Villain?

Neither lead is a simple hero. Young Billo is warm and impulsive, but she laughs at a joke about Baala’s mother’s death and rejects him over caste. Older Billo is cold and calculating, and by Episode 10 she is the powerful figure who wants Baala destroyed. Baala starts as a dreamer who wants respect, but humiliation turns him into a killer and a robber. Critics have praised Mahira Khan for playing an increasingly ruthless, morally grey Billo, and much of the online debate is about which of the two was more wronged.

Zareena has also become a talking point. Viewers are split between “Team Baala” and “Team Zareena” over how Baala treats his loyal wife, and Amar Khan has publicly responded to criticism of the character.

Mitti De Baway Cast: Where You Have Seen the Actors Before

  • Mahira Khan (Billo): Best known for Humsafar and for starring opposite Shah Rukh Khan in the Bollywood film Raees. Billo is one of the darkest roles of her career.
  • Wahaj Ali (Baala): One of Pakistan’s most popular leading men after Tere Bin, Mujhe Pyaar Hua Tha and Sun Mere Dil. Baala lets him play a character across nearly 20 years, from a hopeful young man to a hardened criminal.
  • Amar Khan (Zareena): An actress, writer and director. She and Wahaj Ali worked together earlier on a 2019 revenge thriller, and Mitti De Baway reunites them as husband and wife.
  • Sohail Ahmed (Phajja): The veteran comic actor famous as “Azizi” on the show Hasb-e-Haal. As the gang leader Phajja, he plays against type in a serious, menacing role.
  • Aena Khan and Fazal Hussain (young Billo and Baala): The two newcomers have been among the biggest surprises in the Mitti De Baway cast, and viewers have praised their flashback love story.

Mitti De Baway Story: What Is the Drama About?

Mitti De Baway is a love story told backwards. It opens in 1999 with Baala walking out of Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore and being attacked, then moves back through 1996 and 1980 to show how he and Billo became enemies. Because the audience knows early on where Baala ends up, the drama is less about whether the lovers reunite and more about what broke them apart.

In 1980 Wazirabad, young Baala comes from a poor family of folk performers and dreams of becoming a film actor. He falls for Bilqees Bano, but she is engaged into a wealthy family. When his mother dies, Billo rejects him because of his caste and his parents’ profession, and she marries into the Shah family.

Sixteen years later in Faisalabad, Baala, now known as Iqbal Channan, is a successful businessman. Billo, married with two sons, asks him to keep their past secret. The truce collapses when Billo exposes his family background and the Shahs humiliate him over a marriage proposal for his brother Aslam. Baala answers by bringing in Mai Pathan, who reveals Billo’s past, and Billo is thrown out of her husband’s house.

Aslam elopes with Nousheen, and both are killed. In revenge, Baala kills three members of the Shah family, including Nazeer Shah. His loyal friend Ghulam Rasool takes the blame and later dies in prison. Baala goes into hiding and starts carrying out armed robberies for Phajja, while Billo vows revenge.

What Does Mitti De Baway Mean?

“Mitti De Baway” is Punjabi for “figures of clay” or “clay dolls”. The title comes from a poem by the Punjabi poet Shiv Kumar Batalvi. It suits the story: Billo and Baala are shaped by the soil, caste and customs of Punjab, and they break just as easily as clay.

The song draws on Punjabi folk music and is used as both the opening and closing theme, fitting the drama’s story of a love that never came together.
